How do you show up in ChatGPT and other AI answers?
AI assistants recommend businesses they can find, read and trust. Keep your facts the same everywhere, make your website easy for AI to read with clean HTML and structured data, answer real questions clearly and earn reviews and mentions on other sites.

To show up in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews, your business needs to be easy to find, easy to read and easy to trust. That means the same facts everywhere, a website AI tools can read without effort, clear answers to the questions your customers ask, and reviews and mentions on other sites. No one can guarantee a place in AI answers, but these steps make your business a much clearer choice.
How do AI assistants find information about businesses?
AI assistants answer from two sources. The first is what the model learned during training, from a large snapshot of the web. The second is a live search: when a question needs current facts, tools such as ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews look up web pages in real time and summarize what they find, often with links.
For a business, the live search matters most. That is where your website, your Google Business Profile, your reviews and articles about you come in.
Making your content easy for AI assistants to find, understand and recommend is often called GEO (generative engine optimization).
How do AI assistants decide whom to trust?
They look for facts that agree. If your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn page and directory listings all show the same name, address, services and opening hours, an assistant can state those facts with confidence. If the sources disagree, it may leave you out or repeat the wrong detail.
They also look at what others say about you: reviews, press, partner websites, forums and lists of recommended businesses. A business that is mentioned in several trusted places is easier to recommend than one that only describes itself.
What can you do to show up in AI answers?
- Keep your facts the same everywhere. Check your name, address, phone number, services, prices and hours on your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, Facebook and directories. Correct any that differ.
- Let AI crawlers in. Make sure your robots.txt file, firewall or CDN does not block AI search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot (used by ChatGPT) and PerplexityBot by accident.
- Put your content in clean HTML. Many AI crawlers do not run JavaScript. Text that only appears after a script runs, or only in an image or PDF, may never be read. Your services, prices and contact details belong in plain text on the page.
- Add structured data. Structured data (schema.org) is a small block of code that labels your facts for machines: this is the business name, this is the address, these are the opening hours. Use Organization or LocalBusiness markup for your business, and FAQPage where you answer questions.
- Answer real questions clearly. Write pages that answer what customers ask, with the answer in the first sentence under each heading. Assistants quote pages that answer directly.
- Earn reviews and mentions. Ask satisfied customers for reviews on Google and on the platforms that matter in your industry, and reply to them. Look for mentions in local press, industry sites and partner pages. Never buy or fake reviews.
- Add an llms.txt file. This short file gives AI tools a plain summary of your business and links to your key pages. Its role is modest, but it takes little time. See what is llms.txt.
- Write for each market in its own language. If you serve customers in several countries, give each language its own pages, so assistants can answer in that language. See multilingual websites.
How do you check whether AI recommends you?
Ask the assistants yourself. Open ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google in a private browser window and ask the questions your customers would ask, such as "Which [type of business] in [city] do you recommend?" or "What does [your business] offer, and what does it cost?"
Note what is correct, what is wrong and what is missing, and which competitors appear instead. Answers vary from one try to the next, so ask each question more than once, and repeat the test every month.
How long does it take to show up?
It depends on the source. Changes to your website can appear in AI answers that use live search once your pages have been crawled again. What a model learned in training changes only when the model is updated. Reviews and mentions build up over months. Treat it as ongoing work, much like SEO.
If you are planning a new website, it is the right moment to build all of this in from the start. Our guide to how much a website costs shows what every site should include.
