WordPress vs Astro: which is right for your website?

Choose WordPress if your site needs many plugins, many editors or a WooCommerce shop. Choose Astro if you want a fast, secure business website with low running costs and little software to maintain.

In the choice between WordPress and Astro, pick WordPress if your website needs many plugins, many people editing it every day or a WooCommerce shop. Pick Astro if you want a fast, secure business website with low running costs and little software to maintain. Both are good tools for different jobs, and our own site runs on Astro.

What is WordPress?

WordPress is an open-source content management system (CMS): software that runs on a web server, stores your content in a database and assembles your pages from it. It powers a large share of the web, so there is a theme, a plugin and a developer for almost every need. Its editor is familiar to many marketing teams.

What is Astro?

Astro is an open-source web framework that turns your pages into plain HTML before anyone visits. The finished pages can be served from a content delivery network (CDN), a group of servers around the world, with little or no JavaScript. You edit content through a simple editor, and for most business sites there is no database or plugin to update on the live server.

When is WordPress the better choice?

WordPress is a strong fit when:

  • You rely on many plugins, for memberships, events, online courses, forums or advanced forms, and want to add new ones without a developer
  • Many people edit the site every day, with different roles and approval steps
  • You run a shop with WooCommerce, especially with a large catalog, many product options or extensions for shipping and accounting
  • Your team already knows WordPress and has a way of working that suits it

With good hosting, regular updates and a careful choice of plugins, a WordPress site can stay fast and secure for years.

When is Astro the better choice?

Astro is a strong fit when:

  • Your site is a business website: services, about, cases, a blog, contact, and perhaps bookings through an external system
  • Speed matters to you. Pages built in advance and served from a CDN load quickly on phones. Our own builds score 100 in Google Lighthouse on mobile, and we aim for 95 or higher on every site
  • You want less maintenance. Without plugins or a database on the live server, there is much less to update
  • You want low running costs. Static pages are inexpensive to host
  • AI search matters to you. Plain HTML is easy for search engines and AI assistants to read, and many AI crawlers do not run JavaScript

What are the trade-offs?

Every choice has some.

  • With WordPress, you get great flexibility from plugins. In return, you keep the core software, the theme and each plugin up to date, on hosting that runs PHP and a database.
  • With Astro, you get a fast, low-maintenance site. In return, new features are built by a developer rather than installed from a plugin directory. Editing is simple and focused: you change text, images and posts, while larger layout changes go through your developer.

Neither is wrong. The question is which trade-off suits your business.

How do you choose?

Ask these five questions:

  • Do you need features that today come from plugins?
  • How many people will edit the site, and how often?
  • Will you sell products online, and how many?
  • How much time and budget do you want to spend on maintenance each year?
  • How important are speed and visibility in AI answers?

If the first three answers point to "a lot," WordPress is likely the better fit. If speed, security and low upkeep matter most, Astro deserves a serious look. Our guides to custom website vs template and how much a website costs cover the other parts of the decision.

Can you move from WordPress to Astro without losing traffic?

Yes, with careful planning. We moved atelierattn.com from WordPress to Astro: 119 posts and 56 pages. We checked all 232 old URLs, and none were lost. We also matched the SEO title and description on every page. The steps are in website migration and SEO.

Can you edit an Astro website yourself?

Yes. Your text, images and blog posts are edited in a simple editor, without touching code. What changes is the bigger work: a new type of page or a new feature is added by a developer, not by installing a plugin.
