Google Ads vs SEO vs GEO: which one should you invest in first?
"Should we run Google Ads?" is one of the questions we hear most. In 2026 there is a third option in the conversation: GEO, being named in AI answers. The honest answer depends on one thing first: are people already searching for what you sell?

"Should we run Google Ads?" is one of the questions we hear most. In 2026 there is a third option in the conversation: GEO, being named in AI answers. The honest answer depends on one thing first: are people already searching for what you sell?
Three ways to be found, in one minute
- Google Ads puts you at the top of search results today. You pay per click, and it stops when you stop paying.
- SEO earns you a place in the normal results over months. You invest in content and a fast, clear website, and the traffic keeps coming.
- GEO (generative engine optimization) gets your business named and quoted when people ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google's AI. It builds on SEO, plus clear facts that match everywhere AI looks.
| Google Ads | SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Speed | Days | Months | Months |
| What it takes | Every click | Content and site work | Content, facts and site work |
| When you stop | Traffic stops | Traffic stays a while | Mentions stay a while |
| Best for | Demand that exists now | Steady demand | Being recommended by AI |
What Google Ads actually does
Search ads capture demand that already exists. Someone types "hotel website design Hanoi", your ad appears, and you pay when they click.
What ads do not do well is create demand. If nobody searches for your product yet, no budget will change that. Ads harvest. Brand, SEO and GEO plant.
Five situations where Google Ads makes sense
- People already search for your service. Ads put you at the top while you build organic rankings.
- You are new, and SEO needs time. Ads bring traffic and data from day one.
- A launch or a date you cannot miss. A hotel opening, a Tết offer. Timing beats cost.
- You want to test an offer before you invest in content.
- Competitors bid on your name. A small branded campaign protects the customers already looking for you.
Four situations where ads usually waste money
- Your landing page is weak. If it is slow or hides the price, you pay to disappoint visitors.
- You cannot measure conversions. Set up tracking for calls, forms and bookings first.
- Nobody searches for what you sell yet. Awareness comes first.
What is GEO, and how is it different from SEO?
GEO vs SEO in one line: SEO gets you ranked in the list, GEO gets you named in the answer.
More people now ask an AI assistant instead of scrolling a list of links. Ahrefs found AI Overviews on 82.91% of US desktop branded searches in its October 2026 study (a vendor study). When AI answers first, being named in the answer matters as much as ranking below it.
The good news: GEO is not a separate trick. Google Search Central says there are no special requirements for its AI features: a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet. Other assistants need content they can read without running scripts, and facts that match across your website, Google Business Profile and listings.
So good SEO is the entry ticket to GEO. GEO adds the last step: making sure AI describes you correctly and has a reason to name you. Read more about our AI visibility and GEO work.
Does paying for Google Ads help with SEO?
Not directly. Google keeps its ads and its organic results separate: buying ads does not move your pages up in the normal results. The indirect help is real, though. Your ad data shows which searches and messages turn into customers, and that is exactly what your SEO and GEO content should be built on. That is the SEO vs PPC question answered: they do different jobs, and they make each other smarter.
Is SEO dead in 2026?
No, it is evolving. AI answers are built on pages search engines can find and trust, so SEO is now the foundation for GEO.
What changed in Google Ads in 2026
AI Max for Search is out of beta. Google's AI matches your ads to more searches, writes ad text from your assets and picks landing pages. Google reports an average of 7% more conversions with the full AI Max feature set (Google's own data). The lesson: your website content and conversion tracking now steer your ads.
Ads, SEO or GEO? Usually all three, in a sequence
- Start ads for searches that already exist and convert.
- Learn which searches and messages bring customers.
- Write content around the winners, so you rank for them organically.
- Make your facts AI-ready, so assistants can name you for the same questions.
- Shift budget away from searches you now own, toward new tests.
Is Google Ads worth it for you? A quick self-check
- Do people search for my service in my area?
- Does my landing page load fast and answer the main question?
- Can I track a call, form or booking?
- Can I commit to a few weeks?
- Do AI assistants describe my business correctly today?
Four or five yeses: Google Ads is worth testing. A "no" on the last one: start your GEO work now, because it takes months.
Whether a monthly budget is enough depends on what one customer is worth to you and what a click costs in your market. Work it out from your own account. There is no borrowed average that fits every business.
What to take away
