Custom website or template: which is right for you?
A template is fine when your needs are standard, your budget is small or you need to launch fast. A custom website pays off when your brand, your sales process or your growth plans need more than a template can give.

Choosing between a custom website and a template comes down to what your site has to do. A template is a good choice when your needs are standard, your budget is small or you need to launch quickly. A custom website pays off when your brand, your sales process or your plans for growth need more than a template can offer, and many businesses do well with a middle road.
What is the difference between a custom website and a template?
A template, also called a theme, is a ready-made design. You choose one, add your logo, text and photos, and adjust the colors and fonts. Platforms such as WordPress, Squarespace, Wix and Shopify offer thousands of them.
A custom website is designed for your business. Its structure, layout and details start from your goals and your customers, not from a design made to suit many businesses at once.
When is a template fine?
A template is a sensible choice when:
- You are just starting and want to test an idea before you invest more
- Your needs are standard, such as a few pages, a contact form and a gallery
- Your budget is limited and you would rather spend it on content, photos or advertising
- You need to be online next week and are happy with a design that others may also use
- You like making changes yourself within the options the theme offers
A good template, filled with clear writing and real photos, can serve a small business well for years.
When does a custom website pay off?
Custom design earns its cost when your website has a specific job that a template does not cover:
- Your brand needs to stand out in a market where many businesses look alike
- Your customers follow a particular path, such as choosing a room, requesting a quote or booking a call, and every step needs to be clear
- You serve several markets and need pages written for each language and culture (see multilingual websites)
- Speed and search matter to you. A site built only for your content is easier to keep fast, and easier for search engines and AI assistants to read
- You connect to other systems, such as a booking engine, a CRM or a stock system
- You plan to grow and want a structure that can take more pages, services or markets without starting over
Is there a middle road?
Yes, and many businesses take it. Instead of a ready-made theme or a design made entirely from scratch, the site is designed for your brand but built from proven components: headers, service sections, forms, FAQs and booking blocks that have already been tested on other sites.
This is the approach we prefer. We design your pages in Figma for your brand, then build them in Astro from reusable components. You get a site that looks like your business and fits your customers, in less time than designing every element from nothing.
There is a second middle road: start with a template now and plan a custom site for later. If you choose this, keep your content well organized and note your page addresses, so a later move is simple. Our guide to website migration and SEO explains why the addresses matter.
How do you decide?
Ask yourself three questions:
- What is the one thing your website must do for your business?
- Can a template do that well, on a phone, in every language you need?
- Will it still suit you in three years, when your business has grown?
If the answers point to a template, choose a good one and spend your budget on content. If they point to custom design, a clear brief and a fixed quote keep the project predictable. Our guide to how much a website costs explains what drives the price, and WordPress vs Astro helps with the choice of platform.
Does a custom website take longer?
A little, usually. The design stage needs time for your feedback, and every page is checked against your goals. With a clear brief and ready content, most custom business websites can still launch in a few weeks. See how long it takes to build a website.
