The Agency Job Is Changing Fast. Here’s What I’ve Learned So Far.

A personal note from the founder of Atelier ATTENTION

A few times a year, I sit back and take stock of how we actually work at Atelier ATTENTION. Not what we deliver to clients but how the work itself gets done. Every time I do this lately, I’m a little surprised. The job of a marketing agency is evolving fast agentic AI has moved it further in twelve months than anything did in the previous ten years.

I’d like to share a few honest thoughts about that. Partly because I think it’s interesting. Partly because if you run a business yourself, it probably affects you too.

What hasn’t changed

Let me start with the reassuring part. The core of our craft is exactly the same as it was years ago.

Strategy still comes first. Understanding a target audience, really understanding them, not just knowing their age bracket is still the foundation of everything. Finding the right story for a brand, and telling it in a way that actually connects with people, is still a deeply human skill. We use these skills every single day, and I don’t see that changing.

Technology doesn’t replace judgment. It raises the bar for it.

First, AI made the work easier

Like most agencies, we started using AI tools to speed things up. Drafting, research, variations, analysis, tasks that used to take hours suddenly took minutes. It was helpful, but honestly, it was still us doing the work. The tools were assistants. Good ones, but assistants.

Then agentic AI showed up

This was a different moment. Agentic AI — systems that don’t just suggest, but actually plan, execute, and complete multi-step work, started doing a significant part of the job itself. Research agents that dig through markets and competitors. Agents that monitor, adjust, and report. Agents that hand work to other agents.

And here’s the thing about agentic AI: it is not a static field, to say the least. What was the best setup three months ago is often not the best setup today. That means we are constantly changing, tools, methods, agents, workflows, always looking for the new optimum. It’s demanding. It’s also a lot of fun, if you’re wired that way. Fortunately, we are.

One thing is already clear

Amid all this change, one benefit stands out above everything else: the quality and scope of our work has increased, because in-depth research is no longer a luxury.

Deep market research, competitor analysis, audience insights, these used to be reserved for the biggest projects with the biggest budgets. Now we can do them often, thoroughly, and for clients of every size. For a boutique agency working with SMEs, that is a genuine game changer. Better input means better strategy, better stories, better results.

What we’re experimenting with right now

Currently, we’re testing something I find fascinating: letting our clients interact directly with the AI agent responsible for their account. Ask it questions, request updates, get insights — without waiting for a meeting.

Working on this made me stop and think. If a client can talk to their agent directly… should we go one step further?

A word to fellow entrepreneurs: get your feet wet

This experiment also reminded me of something I tell every business owner I meet: start experimenting with AI now — and I mean agentic AI.

Many entrepreneurs I talk to say, “Oh, we already use AI — we have ChatGPT” or “Claude helps us write emails.” That’s great, truly. But chatting with an AI assistant is not the same as working with agents. An assistant answers your questions. An agent takes a goal, breaks it into steps, uses tools, and gets the work done — sometimes while you sleep. The gap between those two experiences is much bigger than most people realize, and you only really understand it once you’ve seen an agent work on your business, with your context.

So my honest encouragement: get your feet wet. Start small, stay curious, and don’t wait for the “perfect” moment — in this field, waiting is the most expensive option.

Your own agentic marketing setup

In fact, that thought is exactly what led us to an idea we’ve been quietly exploring: what if your business had its own agentic marketing setup — not a generic tool, but a system configured around your brand, your audience, and your goals — maintained and managed together by you and by us?

The more I think about it, the more I realize this is already de facto the case for our existing clients. Their setup, their agents, their data — with us keeping everything tuned and moving forward. For businesses that want to step into agentic AI without the trial-and-error, it could be the easiest way to start. We’re just not calling it a product yet.

Coming soon? Maybe. We’re still experimenting, and I’d rather under-promise and over-deliver. But if you’re an entrepreneur and this sparks something — if you’d like your marketing to work for you even when you’re not working on it — I’d love to hear your thoughts.

A humble conclusion

I won’t pretend we have all the answers. Nobody in this field does right now, and anyone who claims otherwise is selling something. What I do know is this: the fundamentals of marketing haven’t moved, the tools around them are moving incredibly fast, and the winners will be the businesses that combine both — human strategy with agentic execution.

That’s what we wake up for every morning.
